Theory: The solution to smoking

To ban or not to ban.. that is the question. The answer to the most debated question on this blog...

This issue is as polarized as north and south. There are many reasons why it is still unresolved today. The first reason is because of the Constitution. Because the constitution states that people have a freedom of expression and that states get to decide other laws not stated in the constitution, there is a debate among smokers and nonsmokers. Some nonsmokers, though, also believe in these rights and side with the smokers. Another reason this issue remains unresolved today is because it is a health issue and is known to cause harm to individuals near secondhand smoke. Some people don't believe this is even a factor, and they believe secondhand smoke is not dangerous to anyone's health. When there is such a large issue at stake with so many sides to the argument, then it is hard for the sides to come together and decide on a solution. Public issues such as this, the death penalty, and abortion may never become resolved because of the strong beliefs of such separate sides of the argument at hand.

This issue became so contentious because I think people get tired of having to deal with the smell of smoke when they are in public places. Also, it became a large debatable issue in part because of the health risks involved for both sides of the argument. I believe that some of the nonsmokers think that if smoking is banned in public places, then it will lead the smokers to quit smoking and affecting their lives as well as others. If this happens though, the whole idea of banning, and smokers do quit smoking, then the tobacco industry, one of the leading industries in the United States, will plummet, and so will our economy. This is not a fallacy, but the truth because no one will be buying the cigarettes, and either the price will have to increase, or the United States will have to find another crop or industry to rely on more. This cannot and most likely will not happen overnight. So the United States of America needs to find a solution fast before this issue becomes chaotic.

I was really thinking about this question because i know i posted before and said i think smoking in public places should be banned. But then I realized, this is a free country where it's citizens have the freedom to make their own choices as the constitution was set up to protect. If the government starts taking away our freedoms, just by starting with something as little as setting restrictions on smoking, then we are being denied our rights from our own constitution. What is going to stop them from going to far, obviously not our constitution then?

Erin responding to the most recent blog post.
As I read your previous post, I began to narrow my opinion on the topic of second hand smoke and banning smoking in public places. While the US is a free country, people have to realize the damage they are doing to others by smoking. I feel that smoking should be banned in public places because its negative affects heavily outweegh the positives. Second hand smoke causes long term damage to many individuals who may not otherwise be exposed to smoking. Banning smoking will increase the overall public health and result in a healthier environment.

To Krista:
This is one of the most important issues to the 'smoking is ok' side of this policy. If the government takes away this right, people feel they will start taking away other rights as well, such as spitting in public or driving a car in public (because of the harmful fumes from the exhaust). The reason this should be banned is because it is harmful to the health of others who are not deciding to ruin thier life with smoking. I will further explain the issue of how to fix it in the this post in a few minutes when I update the theory.

Krista, I believe what you're saying is true, but I'm doing a report on Second-Hand Smoke right now, and the effects of it and second-hand smoke causes a lot of people to, well, die. I mean, you wouldn't let someone pour toxic waste on the floor and play around in it, and then leave it there for someone else to inhale or step in so they might get permanently scarred or even worse, die? I know thats a bad scenario but I think they should be allowed to smoke but somehwere where it only affects them, do yiou see my point?

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!

Mike
